Headteacher's Weekly Message: 5th January 2018

Welcome back to another great year of learning

It was nice to welcome back students and staff on Wednesday 3 January: Year 11 have been preparing for their practice GCSE examinations which take place from 8- 19 January 2018. Years 7-10 are all settled back in to lessons as usual – I particularly enjoyed seeing Year 8 working on lino-cutting in their art lesson today and Year 11 GCSE Media students using ipads to film part of their project work for this subject.

During Thursday morning staff briefing, our trained student Learning Ambassadors talked to staff about the Learning Ambassadors role in sharing evidence on what great learning looks like from a student’s perspective.

Developing citizenship and sense of community

Every Friday I invite students who have been nominated for Headteacher Student of the Week to meet with me at break-time so I can present them with a certificate and mini-trophy in recognition of their achievements and contribution to Sarah Bonnell Community. This week I was really pleased to congratulate Eliza for the way she has used her own time to support and mentor a Year 7 student. Eliza has made great progress with her own learning and attitude to school over the last year and it is great to see her acting as a positive role model for younger students in the school – Be Proud.

For many of us the New Year brings a chance to reflect on what we would like to change for the better and next week in assembly the theme is ‘Hope’. Students will be asked to reflect on their hopes for the future, what they would like to achieve in the year ahead and identify the support and help they need to do this. In face of recent tragic examples of violence amongst some young people in London, it seems even more important that we work together to get young people to think positively about their future and ensure they get the voice, support and opportunities to develop resilience, hope and realise their ambitions for the future.

On Wednesday 10 January at 6.00pm we are running the second workshop this year aimed at supporting parents with understanding how to support their daughter’s emotional health and well-being. Our school counselling service ‘Here to Listen’ will be running the session and all are welcome.
