As a result of a successful proposal by the student council last year, this month Sarah Bonnell were able to host their first ever STEM Fest.
The STEM Fest was sponsored by Pinsent Masons and aimed to pit the best minds in Newham against each other. Students were set the challenge of designing and carrying out a research project of their choice surrounding the theme the environment. Students worked in groups of 3 on the project and submitted an outline. The best 10 outlines were then shortlisted to take part in the STEM Fest, where thanks to Pinsent Masons there were prizes such as I-pads and Kindles up for grabs! New Scientists also kindly donated some quarterly subscriptions as prizes.
On the day of the STEM Fest each group was given 5 minutes to showcase their project to a panel of judges. A guest speaker, Gaia Cantelli a PhD student from Kings University also came into deliver a talk on Melanoma for students. The judges were extremely impressed with all of the research projects and so had some tough decisions to make.
The winners of the Y9-Y11 category was Krishnika, Iris and Sahra Hussain in Year 11, for their project on Piezoelectricity.
The winners of the Y7-Y8 category were Gabija, Sharmen and Maria in Year 7, for their project on bees.
Sarah Bonnell would like to say a huge thank you to Pinsent Masons for supporting the event and donating the prizes.
