SBS Students Visit China and Meet The Astronauts!
Categories: General News
A group of ten Year 9 students were fortunate to take part in a very special visit to China October 12-22. It was the opportunity of a lifetime because as a Language College, Sarah Bonnell School was invited by HanBn and No. 1 Zhongguancun Primary School in Beijing to take part in their International Week.
The ten days were filled with a packed programme of activities, including a splendid birthday ceremony attended by government ministers, local politicians and the entire Chinese astronaut team, who were interviewed on stage! The whole school was decorated with giant sunflowers (the school symbol), ticker tape and doves were released, students performed, danced and sang on stage and speeches made.

The whole school was decorated with giant sunflowers (the school symbol), ticker tape and doves were released, students performed, danced and sang on stage and speeches made.
As guests, we were presented with beautiful presents and all the 3,000 students performed choreographed ‘mass-movements’ with their sunflower caps: it was an absolutely stupendous.
During the rest of the week, our group took part in lessons with the Beijing students, participated in demonstration lessons for an audience, spoke in a students’ symposium on values in education and learned about Chinese culture and crafts.
There was also a sightseeing programme, including visits to the Forbidden City, Tian’anmen Square, Beijing Zoo, the Olympic Park and the Great Wall of China, as well as a shopping expedition to the famous Silk Street Mall.
We also had the chance to visit our official link Secondary School on the outskirts of Beijing, Changping No 1 High School where we spent a fantastic day talking to the young people, visiting lessons and being treated to a Chinese feast at lunchtime.
Ms Chesters Deputy Headteacher says we are planning further activities and links with Changping High School. Our group returned to the UK, with fond memories of incredible hospitality and generosity from our Chinese hosts, and overwhelmed by the energy and dynamism of Chinese society. When asked about their favourite moments the following girls replied;
My favourite bit of the whole trip was when we went to the primary school and we got to see the ceremony for the schools 60th birthday I thought the effort they put in to it was very good.

My favourite moment in China was the 60th school birthday anniversary ceremony. I particularly loved the performances and I felt that it was well organised and the children all behaved very well.

I loved going to the silk street as it was fun to see how everyone had their own ways to bargain for what whatever they wanted. I loved all the amazing stationary and trying the Chinese Oreo’s.By Evelyn Souasson

My favourite moment on the china trip was when we went to the schools and met the Chinese pupils. I also enjoyed seeing the birds nest stadium for the Beijing Olympics and climbing the Great Wall of China.

I loved going shopping, especially buying the stationery and shoes. There were so much to buy and so many new and different things. It was a great experience as we learnt Chinese through shopping and communicating with people.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the students and the school. I hope the students who went learnt a lot and come back inspired. I hope all the students who took part in the visit are able to transform their experiences into active and positive learning during their classess. And they will also be able to positively influence the learning of their friends. Well done Sarah Bonnell. This makes me very proud of your school.
I liked this because it's my school and my class mates. I didn't go but I think that it was a great opportunity for them to go.
