Year 7 Students Take Part In The Times Spelling Bee
Categories: General News

On Thursday, May 6th, four students from Year 7 – Bareera Borhan (7A), Halima Begum (7E), Tybah Nawal Mostafa (7E), Erika Remollo (7B), with Charu Chowdhury (7A) as reserve – all went to the London and South East final qualifying heat of the Times Spelling Bee which was held at the Cineworld complex , Staples Corner.
They did really well to score 42 points and come 3rd in the competition overall (there were 7 schools competing, the winner being a girl’s independent school from Reading), and Halima did brilliantly to be 4th out of 21 students in the individual challenge! The experience was quite daunting because they had to stand on stage in a large auditorium watched by a sizeable audience, spelling their words verbally (no writing allowed) into a microphone. The best part was having free popcorn in the interval, a goodie bag to take home, and - of course - coming 3rd! Many thanks to Bareera’s and Erica’s mothers who both came to support them.

I enjoyed the Times Spelling Bee much my self and I would like to thank all the people that took part as well as me... I hope we have encouraged the whole school to realise that spelling really does matter. So honestly, I think everything overall was great fun and we represented Sarah Bonnell School extremely well. It is absolutely something to be proud of. My friend and I and my great friend Halima did 7E proud because we came 3rd.
GRAMMATICAL ERROR:LAST SENTENCE; Me and my friend Halima Begum did 7E proud because we came 3rd.
That's a funny grammatical error. The spelling bee was brilliant and I had a blast. I wonder if it's going to happen next year!! I hope so I am looking forward to it!
Overall it was something to obviously remember. And yes as Halima said if it does happen every year. I think her sister Shalima Begum may take part as she is a superspeller. Keep your hope's high...
I thought you all did good, I was also in the finals, but lucky you people got to the semi-finals. I thought you all tried your best so don't think that you have done bad!!!!!!! Me (Nishat) and Ola did our class proud for even going through to the next round. Well Done!!!! :)
