At Sarah Bonnell, we firmly believe that effective continued professional development for all our staff is a core part of securing effective teaching.  We are committed to CPD that:

  • Is explicitly linked to the needs, wants and desires of staff
  • Develops practice based on academic theory and research
  • Links pedagogical practice and subject specialism
  • Develops collaborative peer relationships
  • Supports the professional and career development of all staff

And above all

  • Improves outcomes for students.

We have worked hard on the development of a collaborative culture of scholarship and self-improvement, which allows all teachers and support staff to link their development to improving student outcomes.

Everyone in the Sarah Bonnell community aims high in order to craft an ambitious curriculum for students, and a key part of this is the expectation that all staff will set themselves challenging objectives in order to gain results of which they, and their students, can be proud.

Our CPD programme recognises that a sustained and coherently structure programme of CPD is likely to have a greater impact on staff development and student outcomes than one-off courses.  We run a programme of 10 ‘Twilights’ over the course of an academic year; these are 1.5 hour training sessions that take place on a Wednesday afternoon.  All teaching staff are expected to attend, and support staff are also welcome.

This year, our Twilight focus is Quality First Teaching.  This means that every session is devoted to the development of one aspect of QFT, and taken together the programme over the year will address Sarah Bonnell’s definition of QFT in its entirety.

Every year, Sarah Bonnell hosts a Teach Meet, where teachers from other Newham schools together with our own staff have the opportunity to share best practice and build professional relationships.             This year, our Teach Meet on 30th November is on the theme of Networking, and we have keynote addresses from The Future Leaders Trust, and the Director for Children’s Services in Newham.

The final strand of CPD at Sarah Bonnell is Action Research.  This forms part of the ‘broad and varied’ CPD on offer.  AR is a tool used to enhance pedagogy, with an ultimate aim of enhancing student outcomes. It combines an action (making a change) with research (measuring the impact of this change). This year we are running the following groups:

  • Engaging Learners
  • Marking and Feedback
  • Google Apps for Education
  • Numeracy and Literacy

The findings and impact of the research will be shared with all staff, alongside the AR carried out by our BTs and NQTs, in June 2017.

CPD is regularly evaluated, and we are currently developing a team of Student Learning Observers who offer student voice on the impact of staff CPD on the students’ experience, alongside observing the learning in lessons.

Staff are also able to attend external courses where appropriate and in line with the School Development Plan, for example Exam Board training.
