GCSE English Literature

Aims of The Course

The GCSE English Literature course explores a wide range of Literature and encourages students to develop:
  • The ability to read, understand and respond to all types of literature and to appreciate the ways in which different authors achieve their effects.
  • Skills in locating information for the purposes of Literary Study.
  • Understanding the need to ensure that the form and style of writing is suited to the particular audience and purpose.

Course Content

Students study a variety of post and pre 1914 texts including drama, poetry and prose.

Coursework: 
Students are required to produce a selection of 3 pieces of coursework
  • A response to Shakespeare.
  • A response to Pre & Post 1914 prose.
  • A response to Post 1914 Drama.

Written examination: Students are required to answer 2 questions

  • One on a post 1914 prose text.
  • One on a selection of Pre & Post 1914 Poetry.
Assessment/Other Information
Students are assessed at the end of the course by the quality of their coursework and their success in a written examination. There are two tiers of entry for this - Foundation (C-G) and Higher (A*-D).

The overall percentage for each is as follows:
