GCSE Resistant Materials

Aims Of The Course

To enable students to develop knowledge, practical abilities and confidence to design and make a range of products using resistant materials (eg wood, metal and plastic).

Course Content

Resistant Materials is a Design Technology subject that allows students to follow the Design Process in order to design and make three-dimensional products. Through hands-on experience, students develop confidence and practical skills in a range of resistant materials. The course encourages the students to investigate practices employed by designers and manufacturers in industrial situations. The recent acquistion of a new computer controlled laser cutter and machinery makes this an even more exciting course.
 
Course Structure
  • The course begins with a series of very short projects, designed predominatly to refresh the students’ practical skills.
  • This is followed by a longer project of approximately four months duration, intended to prepare students for their GCSE coursework.
  • Around Easter time in Year 10, students begin their GCSE examination coursework. By this time, students are generally well-prepared and able to work relatively autonomously

Assessment 

All work is assessed in direct relation to the GCSE assessment criteria, thus familiarising students with the standard of work expected of them from the start of the course. Strengths and weaknesses are identified, allowing students to target areas for development as they work through the course
